Hallway Art

We have this hallway in our basement that leads to the laundry room, bathroom and furnace room...it's really too narrow for anything to go in it which makes it a little long and boring.  I had originally hung a couple of picturse on the wall, but it wasn't enough since it is quite a long wall and could use something big and substantial hanging on it.

After looking around on pinterest I decided to add to the pictures that were already there...and I LOVE how it turned out!!

(Sorry...my house is really hard to take pictures of since the walls are so yellow and throws the colors off...and this space is dark since there are no windows nearby....)

But now when I walk down this hallway to do laundry I love looking at the cute faces of my kids!!

My love for photography + decorating my house = the perfect combination!!!

Project 10 | Books

As I was searching around pinterest one day I came across a photography blog that was so inspiring...something I've been trying to do lately...be inspired by others.  I don't know if it's been the never ending winter this year or what, but I really feel like I need some inspiration lately...and not just the kind that's pretty to look at, but the kind that makes you get up and do something.

What caught my eye on Jessica's blog was her most recent post called "Project 10."  This months theme was 'Books' and she shared her take which included 10 beautiful photos.  I decided to join in and see how the word would inspire me....

I had sooooo much fun with this challenge!  I based it around a stack of books that sit in my hutch in the kitchen...no I'm not a very good cook or baker, but I love reading cookbooks and attempting something new once in awhile.

I did manage to do a couple of self timer shots which I don't do enough of.  I always seem to be behind the camera and rarely in front of it ;)

I love how these pictures turned out...how inspired I felt looking at the other photos that were shared and challenging myself to create something.

I'm looking forward to next months challenge now!!

Thanks for letting me play along... K :)

Little Reader

Yesterday Maguire suggested we go to the library.  He wanted to go look for his favorite dvd that we borrow almost every time we are there...but of course I had other ideas!  hehe!!

And with a lot of bribery I think I managed to capture some pretty cute pictures of this guy!!  I love all the cute 'nerdy' glasses pictures all over the place...so this is my take on it.

Isn't he so stinkin' cute??

When we walked into the library I knew this was going to have to be quick.  Maguire doesn't have much patience for my camera...and I wasn't sure what he would think of the glasses!  I knew that if we headed to the "tween" area we might have better luck just being by ourselves...until a couple of different people started looking at the books right where I was trying to shoot.  I'm sure this lady thought I was just crazy, but she sure didn't acknowledge me or what I was doing and just kept searching titles....  I think I would have tried to chat with someone if I saw them doing what I was doing.  Thankfully she was in just the right spot to keep her out of all the pictures!!  hehe!!

I had imagined getting a few other kinds of pictures, but as we were walking towards this table a book caught my eye and I grabbed it not knowing what it was exactly.  When we stopped and I started to look at what I had grabbed it turned out to be the. perfect. book.  Seriously.  I just think the colours of it work perfectly for what I was going for.  And since I really didn't have a ton of time to work and change things up too much it was exactly the right touch.

I think this one has to be my favourite.

Oh man this kid is so cute!

Love him!  xox

What are 5 passions you have?

The days and months seem to go by so quickly that a week or two pass before I realize that I've neglected my blog again.  I have good intentions to journal...document...share...blog...but let's face it there are a million things I'd like to do...and a million things that I actually need to do.  I really need to make blogging more of a priority though cause I know even as I look back at old posts I've written I love that I've recorded something about our life.

Since I haven't added anymore posts to my "30 things" I thought I would pick another topic to share about today.  So here it goes....

"What are 5 passions you have?"

1.  I'll start with an obvious one...Being Creative!  This takes many forms in my life...scrapbooking, photography, painting furniture, making necklaces....  I honestly feel that being creative is important.  It is my outlet when I am feeling run down and needing a break, it allows me to develop my talents more and improve on myself and just makes me happy.  I can feel the difference when I neglect this part of who I am.  I sometimes feel like my creative passion is all over the place, but I love that as I try new things I discover new areas that bring me happiness.  It doesn't just have to be one way of creating, but all these different outlets strengthen and build me up.

A few weeks ago a friend asked me to make some little girl necklaces for her and I loved how it pushed me to create something different than I normally create.  I was inspired by all the cute ribbon necklaces I had seen around, but it was so much fun to try something new.  Who says you have to do things the same all the time??  Change it up and push yourself...you never know what you might discover!

2.  Another "passion" I have is food.  And not really that I love it or need it, but more of the quality and knowledge of it.  It really all started when I surprisingly became pregnant and discovered that food made me sooo sick.  I should really say "fast food" made me sick.  The thought of eating something greasy really grossed me out...and still to this day I have a hard time eating that way.  So for the most part I don't.  I just stay away.  Talking to one of my besties, I started to learn all about health, exercise, healthy eating habits and I loved it.  She totally inspired me to really learn and read more about "clean eating" and the benefits it has for your body.  I quickly saw how it helped me to get in better shape and how it made me feel so much better.  To this day if I'm eating junk...even if it's just one day...I notice.  My hubby probably gets sick of hearing me talk about food, but it's really become more of an obsession than a passion...haha!  And don't get me wrong...you will still see me eating cupcakes and all that yummy stuff, but I just feel more enlightened on the power of healthy eating and it's importance.

One of my favourite "clean eating" inspirations is Tosca Reno and all her "clean eating diet" books.  I seriously LOVE those books!!  I own a bunch of them...and I even have a couple of her cookbooks.  I highly recommend them if you're looking for something to read in the healthy eating department.  :)

3.  Depending on what I'm struggling with in life really determines what I'm passionate about at the time...so something I became passionate about is adoption.  I guess this one is obvious for many reasons, but one of the most touching things about adoption and I guess what I'm most passionate about is the selfless love that is present.  The actual experience is a demonstration of sacrifice...putting someone else before your own wants and needs and having an incredible amount of faith and trust.  I saw in our experience how our birth mom loved Ryker so very much and was so willing to do the very best for him even when she was struggling through heartbreak.  I think of our Heavenly Father and His love for each of us...how He was very near during those difficult moments comforting each of us through our pain and longing of wanting a child and placing a child.  And how together we answered each others prayers and became a family...all of us.  I know this one is deep...but this kind of love is strong and special...I am incredibly grateful for the strength I gained through this experience in my life.  I know that adoption isn't always the answer for everyone, but I am so thankful for a beautiful young woman who followed the feelings of the spirit and her heart and made a very difficult decision because of the love she had for her baby.

Okay...this list is really hard.  I think I'm getting too deep.  I really should lighten up a bit.

4.  Do Mondays count as something i'm passionate about???  It's true though.  I love Mondays!  When I worked this was not the case because Monday meant it was back to work and I really just wanted to be at home.  Now that I have kids I love Mondays!  I love that after a usually crazy weekend I can spend Monday getting everything back to normal around the house.  Everyone is back to work and school and I can do my thing at home.  I have become such a routined person...which is sometimes difficult for my hubby, but I love my daily routine...and my Monday routine.  It makes me feel more in control of my life.  And I need that where ever I can get it!!  hehe!!

5.  This last one probably goes along with my first passion, but I think it's important.  Recording and documenting life.  I often struggle with this myself, but it's something I am trying to do.  I have a bunch of different ways I do this...and I should add I am going beyond scrapbooking cause that only happens here and there...but I classify this as "calendaring, journaling, project life, special keepsake books I have for the boys, scrapbooking, etc..etc..etc.."  This one takes all kinds of forms.  Heidi Swapp always says something like this, "If you don't record it, it's as if it never happened!"  That has always stuck with me, because there are so many things I always tell myself that I will never forget and then a day or two...or a week, month, year passes and I can't remember for the life of me what that unforgettable thing was.  Does that ever happen to you??  It happens to me and makes me wish I was doing a better job of documenting our lives.  Sometimes life is routine and boring and there really isn't anything exciting to write down, but I know that years from now it will be of worth.  I know I've shared this here before, but Cody's mom kept a journal for many years.  Sometimes the entries were short...with maybe a sentence or two, but it is such a treasure to read through twenty or thirty years later.  Each page is special to Cody and his siblings because those writings come directly from their mom who suddenly passed away when they were young and they would never have known many of the the details and memories she shared otherwise.  It's priceless.  It didn't cost any money...it really wasn't hard to do...it just took a little bit of time everyday or sometimes every other day to write down a little story or thought and I always think..."I can do that."  But...I need to be soooo much better.

This post literally took me weeks to figure out.  I thought and thought about what my passions were and seemed to have a harder time with it than it should have been.  But, I'm also glad for the chance to contemplate this topic.  To think about what is important to me.  Being a mom and wife is one of my greatest passions...and I hope that one day when my family reads this entry they will know these things about me already and think "that is so my mom!"..."she really loved doing that"...or "I remember that about her!"  And if not...then here it is for them to read!!  hehe!!

We Eat Gluten Free

Okay...for the most part our family eats gluten free.  When my hubby was diagnosed almost 6 years ago with Celiac Disease I decided that we would all go gluten free to keep things simple (not completely since I still buy bread and do some baking with wheat flour for the kids).

Since then I have been asked numerous times about advice when it comes to eating gluten free and what kinds of products you can eat...etc....  Now I am no expert and my husbands situation is a little different than most because he feels no different symptoms than what he is used to living with having colitis.  What makes this hard is that if he were to have wheat he wouldn't feel any different where someone else might get sick and know the effects right away.  We eat gluten free because even though he doesn't notice any differences, it keeps his small intestine working properly so that he can absorb nutrients and I've been told help keep cancer away...so it's worth it!!

When I started cooking for our family it was very overwhelming.  I didn't know where to look or what to cook so I asked lots of questions from my friend and tried to read anything I could find on the subject.  A lot of the items I cooked did not taste good...it was a change and we were not used to it.  It took a lot of trial and error to figure out what we liked and didn't like, which I am happy to share with everyone but just remember that it is personal preference for a lot of things.  So something we enjoy you may not.  My goal with gluten free is to ALWAYS find things that taste "normal."  I like to try and see if I can find or make something that nobody would be able to tell is gluten free.

So here it goes....  (If you have questions or notice things that might not be correct ask...I am constantly learning and ingredients change).

  • Some of the places I get things you'll have to try and find places close to you...I'll share where I get things anyway and if you live in my area you will know. And maybe the grocery stores near you can even order things in for you??
There are a lot of different flours out there when you start actually baking, but I've found that brown rice flour, rice flour and sweet rice flour are easy to substitute a lot of things. You can't just trade out flour the same way, so it does take some practice...and you also have to freeze your flour once it's opened (I've always done this, but other people don't so you'll have to decide what you want to do). I have a million different flours in my freezer and have kind of figured out the ones we like and the ones we don't like. The best places to get flour (I have found) is Save-on Foods, Sobeys and Planet Organic.  Yes, I am driving to 3 different stores sometimes, but to get the best mix of flours and ones we like you have to.  I find Planet Organic great...especially when I need to buy bigger amounts of flour (this is also where I get sweet rice flour). So if I knew that I needed more of the specialty flours I would make a trip to Planet Organic, but if I just need rice flour or brown rice flour I can easily find it at any local grocery store.  I like the kinnikinnick all purpose flour mix the best. It's way better than Bob's Red Mill....(I find Bob's Red Mill all purpose flour to have a weird taste).  My mom also recently made banana bread from the xo baking co. all purpose flour and it was great too!  So you just need to try a couple to find one you personally like.  I also will follow a recipe from a cookbook to make my own mix, but for ease any of these mixes will do the job.  Almond flour is a good flour to use in baking too, but you still have to use other flours as well. And then xantham gum and guar gum are basically the same and can be traded out for each other. You don't really need both so just choose one cause they're expensive.
udi's gf bread tastes totally normal...at least the most normal we've found. For some reason gf breads usually only taste somewhat okay when you toast them...otherwise they get kind of gritty, but Cody has no problem with this bread. We do of course keep it frozen, but I can make him sandwiches with it and it's good. Just to be clear...when I buy Udi Bread I keep it in the freezer and then when I use it to make sandwiches I ALWAYS toast it. Any of the bread gets a gritty texture if it's left out, so I only take out what I need right in the moment.  And that even goes for most of my gf baking.  I never leave it out on the counter or in the pantry...it always either gets put in the fridge or freezer.
Another product we love is the kinni-kwik bread & bun mix (from Save-on...it's a kinnikinnick product). I mix it up and pour it...yes...you pour this bread mix since it's quite runny (think thicker pancake batter) into a mini muffin tin and then cut up a gf grimm's hotdog and make them into little corn dogs. Everyone loves them (not only gf eaters) and they're so simple. My sister in law who lives in a small town loved them so much (and she is not gf) that she has their grocery store order in the mix and she buys it all the time. Her whole family loves them.  Another version I make is a little pizza bun.  I'll fill the muffin cups and add pizza sauce, cut up grimm's ham or whatever kind of meat I have on hand and sprinkle cheese on top and bake.  Easy.
Pamela's products are really good. We have used the waffle mix and it was really really good!
Our favorite brownies are the Gluten Free Pantry ones (if I'm using a mix), but I've also heard the namaste mix is really good too. I haven't tried them yet, but I need to.  I personally like homemade versions the best, but these are great for a quick dessert.
We are still on the search for a good pizza crust. So far I haven't found anything as good as real pizza crust. But the frozen premade kinnikinnick pizza crusts are the best I've found so far...not totally the same, but they taste good. Or Udi makes a good one too...which you will find in the frozed section of the grocery store.  If you are ever in Vernon, BC there is a pizza place that makes gf pizza and it is really good! The best we've had anywhere!!
All the Tinkyada pasta tastes completely normal which is nice! Even if I was making lasagna I wouldn't cook the pasta first like it says I just make sure sauce covers the whole noodle and add a little extra sauce. But honestly this pasta tastes really good. It's the only pasta I buy now. Our whole family just eats gf pasta instead of making two different kinds of noodles. You'll just have to decide what to do for your family since gf is more expensive.
And I also have a gf pinboard on pinterest. The recipes I've tried from there have all been good. Anything I've made I comment underneath, so you'll know if I've made it yet or not!
And remember...you have to be very careful eating gf cause even a crumb can make you feel the same as if you ate a piece of bread. That means no sharing butter...jam...pb...anything like that. Everything has to be separate. It's a lot of work, but you just kind of get into a system! I label all the gf items in the fridge so we don't accidentally share.
I use the the betty crocker cake mixes to replace mixes in my normal recipes. They're usually around $6...so more expensive, but they taste good and are easy for quick desserts.
At superstore the reduced fat cream of mushroom soup and cream of chicken soup are gf. Just read the label...they use corn starch. So make sure it's the reduced fat kind.
You can also buy corn tortillas that we use for tacos...or the hard shells are usually gf just check the ingredients first!
Thai kitchen has Rice noodle bowls that are gf...found in the asian isle of any grocery store. There are a few different kinds to pick from and that's Cody's version of itchiban. I sometimes will add some frozen mixed vegetable (I'll cook them first).
Most Kraft salad dressings are gf...except cesar...again it's just always important to read the labels.
Watch out for malt, barly, rye, and of course wheat, spelt....
Campbells Tomatoe & Basil soup is gf
Kraft bbq sauce is gf (there are other kinds too that will say right on it if its gf)
    VH Soy Sauce is gf
This lady in our ward said that she eats Quaker Oats no problem, but you just can't eat more than a cup a day.  Hearing this made me soooo happy since there are some great recipes that use oat flour (which I grind myself).  Don't buy generic oats though...stick with Quaker or a gf certified oats package.
Avoid...Food Starch, Hydrolized Plant Protein and spices when reading food labels
    McCormicks spices are gf
Some things like corn pops and captain crunch that don't have wheat in them are still not gf since they are produced in factories that make things with wheat so you just have to be careful with things like that.  Always always always read labels and be aware of what else may be processed in the same facotry.
Someone else also said you have to watch shampoo and lotions, and lip glosses but we've never worried too much about those things.
Honestly most of it is learning to cook from scratch which I didn't do very good before.
The great thing too is there are endless fruits and veggies that you can eat!

I know this turned into a random post...full of little pieces of advice, but there's just so much to share.  Hopefully I've helped you in some way.  And if you have more advice please share!!  I love helping out!

p.s. I'll share some favorite blogs, websites and recipes soon!

hello little toes

There is nothing like little toes.  They are some of my favourite pictures to capture...and something I never want to forget about my children.  I just can't resist!  hehe!!

I went into my room last night...which has been a complete disaster lately...with intentions to get some layouts done of Maguire since he has hardly any compared to Ryker.  Two things happened.  I realized I was out of adhesive...AAAGGHHH!!  How did that happen??  So I quickly scrounged around in my drawers until I found something I could use....  And then as I started to look at pictures I stopped when I saw this one of Ryker's little 3 year old feet.

It was our second summer renting a cabin with my family and we had taken all the little kids down to the beach to take some pictures.  Ryker had perched himself on the edge of the steps so I quickly snapped this picture.  And now as I look at it I remember the many many events that took place on that vacation.  How one night Ryker and I stayed out on the beach longer than anyone else and we played in the water for hours.  And then there were countless moments playing and rolling around in the grass with cousins.  Or the many walks we took exploring the creek beside the cabin.  And who could forget the haircut I gave Ryker that went all wrong...the memories flooded in from one picture of Ryker's small feet.

This was the photo that inspired this layout.

And can I just say that these Heidi Swapp products are inspiring in and of themselves!  The colours are so fun and the products allow you to get down and dirty...creating and distressing to my hearts content! That color shine is so fun and the chipboard stickers have some serious stick!  I think I need to make another trip to Michaels for more stuff...and I've already stocked up on a bunch of it!!

I think I just need a creative night with my bestie...hint...hint...Tal!!

20 Random Facts

I'm sure you've all seen this on pinterest....

When I saw it I immediately wanted to get started...and thought it might be fun to get me motivated to blog more.  Although blogging about myself is hard and makes me a little nervous...I'm going to try to complete as much of the list as I can.  I won't be doing the 30 day part...that's just too much pressure.  haha!  It's just going to be something I do as I want and when I want...mixed in with other normal posts through out the year.

If you care to read...here I go!

(This is what a week in bed with 2 sick boys looks like!)

  1. I love to be creative...whether I'm scrapbooking, painting furniture, making necklaces, taking pictures or doing some kind of pinterest project...I love it.
  2. I can't just sit and watch a movie at home.  I have to be working on something at the same time.  Of course it drives my hubby crazy, but I just can't seem to sit still otherwise and almost feel like I'm wasting time.
  3.  The sound of a napkin ripping and sticking to something (like if you were to lick the napkin to make it wet....ugh...eee...can't handle it) gives me the heebie jeebies.
  4. I love vanilla ice-cream!  My hubby thinks that it's soooo boring, but it would probably be my first choice if given 50 flavours to choose from.  Really anything vanilla...cake...icing...etc.
  5. I love music, but don't listen to a lot of it since any awake moments are spent listening and watching children's choices.  And when I have a moment of silence I savour it.
  6. I'm not comfortable being in the spotlight and feel very content watching, listening and learning from others quietly from the sidelines.
  7. Fast food makes me sick!  Even though I will eat it once in awhile I will always feel sick to my stomach a couple of hours later.  (thanks to my pregnancy with Maguire I have never been able to eat it again!)
  8. I am surprisingly calm in stressful situations.  Which leads to #9....
  9. I delivered my sister's baby (with her husband).  She went into labour before she could make it to the hospital and I just happened to be coming to pick up her daughter...but came just in time to be a part of the most scary situation I've ever been in.
  10. I love to read...especially British humour!  I think I enjoy 'light reading' so that I can pick it up and put it down whenever I need to.
  11. Cookies are my downfall...I've decided I can't even make them or I will eat the all!!!...any kind.
  12. I like to think that I'm not a picky eater, but I just can't eat seafood.  I try and try, but I just can't seem to fall in love with it.  Anything else I'll eat.
  13. Change scares me.
  14. I was "Frenchie" in our grade 12 musical theatre play.  I remember being so shocked when I got the role in Grease!...and my bestie played Sandy so we had a great time!!
  15. If I ever decided to go back to work I don't know if I'd be able to choose what I would want to do.  I would love to do hairdressing, take my photography more seriously, maybe do occupational therapy, something with decorating and nutrition interests me...too many choices!  Now if only I would have known that 15 years ago when I was registering for College...I wouldn't have had to suffer through a year of Medical Reception.  haha!!
  16. My dream vacation takes many forms...laying by a pool somewhere tropical or shopping my heart out!  Either sounds like the perfect holiday :)
  17. I will always smell the dishwasher soap before putting it in the dispenser...it has such a clean fresh smell!  My favourite!!
  18. I once ate fertilizer with my friend (yes...I was young) because we thought someone had spilt their little candies all over the trampoline.  We cried after thinking we were going to die, but my dad reassured us we would be fine.
  19. I am a procrastinator and have a hard time making decisions.  I admire my sister who just gets things done...I am really trying to be more like that.
  20. I believe that my 30's are turning out to be way better than my 20's.  Maybe it's because of all the life lessons I learned in those years, but I never imagined how much I would actually enjoy getting a bit older (except for the wrinkles!)...and don't get me wrong I don't want to keep getting older I just feel so much more comfortable with who I am.

Okay, that was hard!  haha!!  In the beginning I was struggling trying to think of things, but by the end I could have added a few more.
